Aashray’s journey began with a simple idea: when young people come together with a shared commitment to their community, meaningful change can begin at the grassroots level.
In 1995, a group of young people from Chedurupally came together to take up community development activities in their villages. Their efforts led to the formation of the Chedurupally Youth Association, registered under the Society Act. The association worked with young people and communities through career guidance, sports activities, devotional programmes and youth development initiatives across rural areas of Mahbubnagar District.
Over the years, this experience helped the team understand the deeper challenges faced by children, young people and vulnerable communities. It also created a strong foundation for a broader and more focused approach to social development.
The Beginning of Aashray
In 2003, the organisation was renewed as Aashray – Home Away from Home, with a wider vision and renewed objectives. The organisation began focusing on areas including child care and development, quality education, youth development and health.
The name Aashray, derived from Sanskrit, reflects the idea of providing protection, support and shelter to people facing difficult circumstances.
This vision became particularly important through the organisation’s work with vulnerable and street-connected children.
Responding to the Needs of Children
Before Aashray was formally established, its founding members had already been involved in initiatives addressing the challenges faced by children living and working around railway stations and urban streets.
Many children who ran away from home found themselves in unsafe environments. Some were orphaned or semi-orphaned, while others had families but had become separated from them due to difficult circumstances. Without adequate support, these children were exposed to exploitation, abuse, neglect and other risks.
Aashray began responding to these challenges by providing children with care, protection, counselling and educational support. Working in collaboration with Railway Police, government departments and other organisations, the team supported the identification, rescue and rehabilitation of vulnerable children.
Creating Safe Spaces and Opportunities
Aashray established transit and shelter homes near Secunderabad Railway Station, creating safe spaces where children could receive immediate care and support.
The approach went beyond providing shelter. Children were counselled, their situations were understood, and efforts were made to reconnect them with their families wherever possible. Children without parents or suitable guardians were referred to appropriate child-care institutions where they could continue receiving care, protection and education.
The organisation also worked with the State Education Department in managing residential bridge-course schools and centres, helping children who had been excluded from formal education find pathways back into learning.
Growing Beyond Child Protection
As Aashray continued its work, its understanding of community needs expanded. The organisation began addressing wider issues affecting children, families, migrants and labour communities.
Its initiatives have included community development, access to government welfare schemes, education, health and support for migrant and labour communities.
Through these efforts, Aashray has continued to build partnerships with communities, government institutions, local networks and other stakeholders.

Aashray’s journey demonstrates how a grassroots youth initiative can grow into a broader movement for child care, education, protection and community development.
From its beginnings in Chedurupally to its work with vulnerable children and communities, the organisation continues to focus on creating safer environments, expanding opportunities and helping people move towards a more secure and dignified future.
The journey that began with a group of young people continues today—with the same belief that community participation, compassion and collective action can create lasting change.
